Antonym Challenge Generator
Picks a common word to find the opposite of, for vocabulary practice or a literacy classroom activity — the opposite-meaning counterpart to the site's synonym-challenge generator.
What this generator does
Draws a word and asks for its opposite. Antonyms are more interesting than they look, because a great many words have no single opposite — the opposite of 'run' depends entirely on whether you mean the speed, the direction or the machine.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 12 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- hot — what's the opposite?
- generous — what's the opposite?
- brave — what's the opposite?
- expand — what's the opposite?
- smooth — what's the opposite?
- genuine — what's the opposite?
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 12, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random — general vocabulary-practice words.. Last reviewed 2026-07-18.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a word.
- Find the opposite, or generate again.
Common use cases
- Vocabulary-building practice
- Literacy classroom activities
- Word-choice writing exercises
How this generator works
Draws from twelve fixed words without repeats up to a batch of five, so several words requested in one press never repeat within that batch.
Randomness and fairness
Words are drawn uniformly with the browser's cryptographic random number generator. Nothing checks whether the drawn word actually has a clean opposite, which is deliberate — the words that do not are the most useful ones to discuss.
For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Limitations and good to know
- Twelve words is a small pool; a class doing this weekly will exhaust it within three months.
- No opposite is supplied — this names the word only, so checking an answer is down to you or a dictionary.
Practical tips
- Accept more than one answer where more than one is right, and ask why they differ. That conversation is the actual vocabulary lesson.
- Words with no clean opposite are the best ones to discuss, not ones to skip.
