Choosing the right decisions tool
Three kinds of tool, for three kinds of choice. The quick pickers are for the genuinely arbitrary one — where nothing distinguishes the options and you want to stop deliberating. They make no attempt to judge which option is better, because a random draw cannot; if you find yourself rejecting a result and drawing again, that reaction is usually the answer you were looking for. The weighing-up tools go the other way and involve no chance at all: they score options against criteria you weight yourself, show how far a weight would have to move before the winner changed, or put a list in order from your own two-way answers. The fair-share tools divide something — a bill, the rent, a contested set of items, seats after a vote — by a method you can state and defend, which is what people usually mean by fair when luck is not acceptable.
