Booklet Imposition Generator

Print a zine the wrong way round and you find out at the folding stage, with the paper already used. Saddle stitching puts the last page beside the first on the outer sheet, the second beside the second-to-last on its back, and works inwards — which is why the page count must be a multiple of four. This gives the order sheet by sheet, and proves it by folding the stack back up and checking the pages read 1, 2, 3.

What this generator does

Pads the page count up to a multiple of four, then pairs pages outwards-in: the outer sheet carries the last page and the first, and each sheet inwards moves one page in from each end. The finished order is folded back into reading order before it is shown.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter how many pages the booklet has, counting every side.
  2. Read the table: each row is one sheet of paper, front and back.
  3. Print each sheet double-sided in the order shown.
  4. Stack them in order, fold once, and staple the fold.

Understanding the controls

Pages in the booklet
Count every side, including any you intend to leave blank. Anything that is not a multiple of four gets blanks added at the end, and the tool says how many.

How this generator works

On a saddle-stitched sheet the front carries the last page on the left and the first on the right; the back carries the second on the left and the second-to-last on the right. Each sheet inwards moves one page in from each end. Rather than trusting that pattern, the finished imposition is verified by reconstructing the fold: reading the fronts and backs in the order a folded stack presents them must give 1, 2, 3 and so on with no page missing and none appearing twice.

Randomness and fairness

Nothing here is random. A page count has exactly one saddle-stitched imposition.

Limitations and good to know

  • Saddle stitch only — perfect binding, section sewing and multi-signature booklets impose differently and are not covered.
  • One page per side, so two-up or four-up printing on larger paper needs a further step in your printer settings.
  • Creep is not compensated: on a thick booklet the inner pages stick out slightly and normally need trimming or a small shift.
  • Duplex printers vary in which edge they flip on, so print one test sheet before committing a whole run.

The page order is calculated in your browser. The page count you enter is not transmitted, stored or included in analytics.
