Circle of Fifths Drill Generator

Everybody has seen the circle of fifths diagram and most people still cannot say how many sharps are in E major without counting round it. A diagram is a reference; recall is a different skill and it only comes from being asked. This asks — key signatures, relative minors, neighbours round the circle and the order the sharps and flats appear in.

What this generator does

Generates recall questions about the circle of fifths and gives you the answers to check against. The question types cover the four things the circle actually encodes: how many sharps or flats a key has, which minor key shares a signature with which major, which keys are adjacent to a given one, and the fixed order the sharps and flats are always written in. Each is a different piece of knowledge and most people are much stronger on one than the others.

Understanding the controls

Question types
Key signature counts, relative minors and majors, neighbours on the circle, and the order of accidentals. Restrict to the one you are weakest at — the whole reason to drill rather than read a diagram is to work on recall you do not have.
Key range
The fifteen practical key signatures, or all of them including the theoretical keys with double sharps. The practical fifteen are what appears in real music; the theoretical ones exist to complete the pattern and to be argued about.
Number of questions
Up to forty. A two-minute drill is about ten. Doing ten daily is far more effective than forty once a week, because this is recall and recall responds to frequency.

Key signature
How many sharps in E major? Three: F♯, C♯, G♯.
Relative minor
What is the relative minor of A♭ major? F minor — same four flats.
Neighbours
Which keys sit either side of D major on the circle? G major one step anticlockwise, A major one step clockwise.
Order of accidentals
What is the fourth sharp? D♯. The order is F, C, G, D, A, E, B and it never changes.

How this generator works

Every answer is derived rather than looked up. The number of accidentals in a key comes from counting its distance round the circle of fifths from C; which accidentals they are comes from applying the fixed orders — F, C, G, D, A, E, B for sharps and the exact reverse for flats — for that many steps. The relative minor is found a minor third below the major, which is the same thing as saying it is the sixth degree. Deriving rather than storing is what lets the tool handle the theoretical keys correctly, and it is why the answers agree with a properly written key signature rather than with a simplified chart.

Randomness and fairness

Which key and which question type are drawn independently with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, so the same key can appear more than once in a set. The answers are computed from the circle rather than drawn, so they are facts rather than choices. A seed makes a drill reproducible for a class. That mode is deterministic and not cryptographically secure, which is precisely why the same ten questions can be printed twice.

Assumptions this tool makes

  • Standard Western key signatures, with the conventional order of accidentals.
  • Relative minor means the minor key sharing a key signature, found on the sixth degree of the major.

Limitations and good to know

  • It tests recall of the circle, not what to do with it. Knowing E major has four sharps does not tell you how to modulate to it.
  • The theoretical keys are included at the wider setting and are genuinely not used in real music. They are a completeness exercise.
  • There is no diagram. This is deliberate — a visible circle turns every question into a reading exercise — but it does mean you need to know the layout already.
  • It cannot mark your answers, only give you the correct ones.
  • The order of sharps and flats is a notation convention rather than an acoustic fact, and is stated as such.

Common mistakes

Counting round the circle every time
That is reading, not recall, and it does not get faster with practice. Learn the sharp keys as a sequence — G, D, A, E, B — and the count comes with them.
Confusing the relative minor with the parallel minor
The relative minor of C major is A minor and shares its key signature. The parallel minor is C minor and shares its tonic. They are different keys entirely and the words are easy to swap.
Learning the order of flats separately from the sharps
It is the sharps backwards. F C G D A E B forwards, B E A D G C F back — and BEAD is a word, which is why most people remember the flats more easily than the sharps.

Practical tips

  • Do ten questions daily rather than a long session weekly. Recall is a frequency skill and the difference is dramatic.
  • Say the answer out loud before revealing. Recognising the right answer when you see it is not the same as producing it, and only one of them helps you sight-read.
  • Once counts are automatic, switch to neighbours. Knowing what is either side of a key is what makes modulation and chord borrowing make sense.

Troubleshooting

The answer includes a double sharp
You are on the wider key range, which includes theoretical keys like G♯ major. Restrict to practical keys — the fifteen that appear in real music.
I keep getting the flat keys wrong
Most people do. The flat keys have the awkward property that the key name is the second-to-last flat in the signature, which is a genuinely useful shortcut once you know it.

Nothing is entered and nothing is stored. Questions are generated in your browser and analytics records only that the tool was used along with the question type — never a question, an answer or a score.

Frequently asked questions

What is the circle of fifths actually for?
It encodes several things at once: how many sharps or flats each key has, which keys are closely related, which minor key shares each major key's signature, and which keys you can move to smoothly. That density is why it is drawn as one diagram and why knowing it as a picture is not the same as being able to use it.
How do I work out a key signature quickly?
For sharp keys, the last sharp is a semitone below the key name — so if the last sharp is D♯, the key is E. For flat keys, the key name is the second-to-last flat, so a signature ending B♭, E♭, A♭ is E♭ major. Those two shortcuts remove nearly all the counting.
Why do the sharps and flats always come in the same order?
Because each new key adds exactly one accidental to the previous one, and moving round the circle by fifths adds them in that fixed sequence. F, C, G, D, A, E, B for sharps, and the exact reverse for flats. It is a consequence of the circle rather than an arbitrary convention, which is why it never varies.
Why is there no diagram on the page?
Because a visible circle turns every question into a reading exercise, and reading a diagram is the thing you can already do. The tool exists to build recall, which only comes from being asked without the answer in view.
