How this generator works

A figure is drawn within a band and formatted with the separators and abbreviations financial writing uses, so a valuation reads as £4.2m rather than 4200000. The bands are separated because a valuation's shape depends on its size: figures below a million are usually written in full, and above a billion they are almost always abbreviated.

Limitations and good to know

• A value picked at random is a prompt for discussion, not a value your organisation holds. The useful part is usually arguing about whether it fits.
• Fictional figures for mock-ups and worked examples. They describe no real company and rest on no method of valuation.
• A single figure is not a valuation. Real ones come with a date, a basis and a range, and the number alone is the least informative part.
• Abbreviations differ between markets — a billion has not always meant the same thing in British and American usage.
