Coordinate Drawing Puzzle Generator

The usual way these sheets are made is to draw the picture first and read the coordinates off it by eye, which leaves the list and the picture as two separate things that agree only as far as somebody was careful. When they disagree, the child following the instructions is the one who finds out. Here the list is the picture: the answer is drawn from exactly the numbers printed on the sheet, so plotting them in the order given traces it and cannot do anything else.

What this generator does

Builds a picture as ordered runs of whole-number points, then prints the runs, a blank grid to plot them on, and an answer grid drawn from the very same numbers. A run is either closed, meaning the last point joins back to the first, or open, meaning the pencil comes off the paper at the end — which is how a door or a mast gets drawn without a line running back across the picture.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a picture, or leave it as a surprise, and pick a first-quadrant or four-quadrant grid.
  2. Make the sheet and print it, or copy the instructions into your own worksheet.
  3. Plot each list in order and join the points as you go; a closed run joins back to where it started.
  4. Show the answer to check, and copy the link if the whole class needs the same sheet.

Understanding the controls

Picture
Seven subjects, or leave it as a surprise. The proportions of each are drawn afresh every time, so the same subject is not the same sheet twice.
Grid
First quadrant keeps every number positive. Four quadrants is the identical picture with the origin moved to the middle, so only the signs change — which is the comparison worth making.
Repeat word
The word this sheet was built from. Anyone opening the same link gets the same sheet, which is what you want for a class set.

How this generator works

The check runs over the finished lists rather than over the intention behind them: every point a whole number inside the axes shown, no run visiting a point twice, and no two edges of a run meeting anywhere except at the corner where they are meant to. That last one is what stops a shape folding through itself, and because every coordinate is a whole number the comparison is exact, with no tolerance to choose.

Randomness and fairness

The sheet is built from a repeat word taken from your browser’s secure generator unless you type one of your own, so the same link gives the same sheet to a whole class. A repeat word exists to make a sheet reproducible; it is not a security measure, and nothing here is suitable for anything that needs to stay secret.

Limitations and good to know

  • The drawings are simple outlines built from straight lines between whole-number points. Nothing here curves.
  • The subjects are deliberately plain and generic. No character, logo or other artwork belonging to anybody else appears, and none can.
  • A picture is checked for not folding through itself run by run. Two separate runs may still overlap where the drawing wants them to — a mast standing inside a hull, for instance.
  • The grid is twenty by twenty, so a very long list of very fine detail is not possible.
  • The answer is on the same page. On a shared screen it has to be hidden rather than absent.

Privacy and your data

The sheet is built on your device and nothing about it is transmitted or stored. The repeat word is a short label this page made or you typed, and it is the only thing that appears in the address; it is never measured.
