Fictional Law Generator
Generates a random invented law or custom for worldbuilding — usable in any genre of fiction, not tied to any specific fantasy or sci-fi setting.
What this generator does
Draws an invented law or custom for a setting. A law is a compressed piece of history — somebody had to have done the thing for it to be banned — so a single odd statute implies a past event, an authority that cared, and a population that had to be told.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- It's illegal to be the last person to leave a funeral.
- Every debt must be repaid before the next full moon.
- Strangers must be fed before they're questioned.
- It's forbidden to light a fire after the harvest bell rings.
- Every dispute must be settled by the eldest present, no exceptions.
- Children may not be named until they've survived their first year.
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated fictional law/custom worldbuilding prompts. Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a law.
- Weave it into your world, or generate again for another one.
Common use cases
- Worldbuilding for any genre of fiction
- Speculative-fiction writing prompts
- Game/campaign setting design
Practical tips
- Decide who breaks it routinely and what happens to them. A law nobody breaks is set dressing; a law selectively enforced tells the reader how the place actually works.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
