An academy, a grammar, a comprehensive, a sixth-form college and a preparatory school admit different children under different arrangements, and a reader who knows the system reads all of that from three words. This builds names from the type first, then the patron or place, so the school you get is a specific kind of school rather than a pleasant sound.

Builds a school name around its type, because that is the part carrying the information. A grammar school selects by examination; an academy is state-funded outside local-authority control; a preparatory school prepares for common entrance at thirteen; an infant school stops at seven. Pairing that with a patron — a saint, a monarch, a founding benefactor — or a place, or a modern specialism, produces a school whose name implies its era, its intake and often its politics.

Limitations and good to know

  • Invented school names collide with real schools regularly, because the naming conventions are narrow and heavily used. Search before publishing anything that portrays the school badly.
  • The types are British. American, Continental and independent-sector-elsewhere naming works differently and this will read oddly there.
  • It names the school and implies its type. It does not invent an ethos, a uniform or a catchment.
  • Fantasy-school naming — the magical-academy register — is a different convention and is not what this produces.
