Gift Box Template Generator

Every box template online is one fixed size, and the thing you want to put in it never is. Give the width, height and depth and this draws the template to fit: the wrap panels, a glue flap for the seam, and tuck flaps cut a little under half the depth so the two that meet inside the lid do not collide.

What this generator does

Works the wrap out from the size of the contents — width, depth, width, depth and a glue flap — sizes the tuck flaps against the depth, and fits the whole template to the page.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick a tuck-top box, a pillow box, or an envelope for a card.
  2. Type the size of the thing going inside, and a millimetre or two of clearance.
  3. Choose a page — the template turns landscape by itself if that is what fits.
  4. Download the SVG, print at 100%, cut the solid lines and fold the dashed ones.

Understanding the controls

What to make
A tuck-top box with a lid that folds in, a pillow box whose ends curve closed without glue, or an envelope sized around a card.
Page size
A4, A3, A5, US Letter or US Legal. A wrap is wide and short, so the page is turned on its side automatically when that is what makes it fit.
Width in millimetres
The measurement across the front of the finished box, or the width of the card an envelope has to hold.
Height in millimetres
Top to bottom of the finished box or envelope.
Depth in millimetres
Front to back. This sets how deep the box is, and how large the tuck flaps have to be. An envelope ignores it.
Clearance in millimetres
Added to every dimension so the contents actually go in. Card has thickness and folds are never perfect; two millimetres is usually enough.

How this generator works

The wrap is width, depth, width, depth and a twelve-millimetre glue flap, which is checked by adding the drawn panels back up and comparing — a box that does not close square is one where that sum is wrong. Every wall is then checked to be the height of the box, the four tuck flaps to be under half the depth so the pair that meet inside the lid clear one another, and the whole template to sit inside the page. The drawing is measured in millimetres, so printing at 100% gives the box the numbers describe.

Randomness and fairness

Nothing is random. The same measurements always draw the same template.

Limitations and good to know

  • The pillow box's curved ends are drawn as fold lines rather than as the arc, which is close enough to cut round by hand but is not a die line.
  • Capacity for a pillow box is an approximation, since it is not a cuboid.
  • Printing scaled to fit changes every dimension, so print at 100%.
  • Card thickness is not modelled beyond the clearance you set; thick board wants more.
