Improvisation Constraint Generator
The hardest thing about improvising is having every option available at once. A constraint removes most of them, and what comes out is almost always more inventive than what you play when anything is allowed. This draws a rule — a restriction on notes, rhythm, range, shape or dynamics — plus a key and a scale to apply it to.
What this generator does
Draws a restriction to improvise under, paired with a key and scale to apply it to. The restrictions are the useful part and they fall into a small number of genuinely different kinds: limits on which notes you may use, limits on rhythm, limits on range or direction, and limits on dynamics or articulation. Drawing across all of those rather than from one list is deliberate — a player who only ever restricts their note choice gets very good at three-note solos and no better at phrasing.
How to use this tool
- Choose how strict you want the constraint to be, and a key if you have one in mind.
- Press Draw.
- Play for at least two minutes under that rule without stopping, even when it stops being comfortable.
- Draw again for a different restriction.
Understanding the controls
- Strictness
- Gentle restrictions leave most options open and are a nudge. Severe ones remove almost everything — two notes, or no note longer than a quaver — and are where the interesting playing tends to come from, because you run out of habits within about thirty seconds.
- Key and scale
- The material the constraint applies to. Drawing a key you would not choose is part of the exercise: most players have three or four comfortable keys and improvise noticeably worse outside them.
- Constraint type
- Restrict to note choice, rhythm, range, or expression — or leave it open and draw from all of them. Choosing one deliberately is how you work on a specific weakness rather than practising what you are already good at.
Worked examples
- Note choice
- D minor pentatonic, three notes only: D, F and A. Two minutes without stopping.
- Rhythm
- B♭ major. No two consecutive phrases may share a rhythm.
- Range
- E Dorian, within one octave, and every phrase must end lower than it started.
- Expression
- A minor, as quietly as your instrument allows without losing tone.

How this generator works
Constraints are drawn from banks organised by what they restrict, then paired with a key and scale drawn separately. The strictness setting decides which band of each bank is in play. Where a constraint refers to specific scale degrees — start on the fifth, avoid the third — the tool works those out from the actual scale you drew, so the instruction names real notes rather than leaving you to do the arithmetic mid-phrase.
Randomness and fairness
The constraint, the key and the scale type are drawn independently with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, so an awkward combination is possible and is usually the most useful draw of the session. A seed makes the sequence reproducible, which is how a teacher sets the same set of exercises for a group. Seeded draws run on a deterministic generator that is not cryptographically secure — reproducibility and unpredictability are opposites, and here reproducibility is what is wanted.

Assumptions this tool makes
- You can already play the scales the constraints refer to.
- Scale degrees are counted from the tonic upwards, so the fifth of D minor is A.
Limitations and good to know
- It cannot hear you, so nothing checks that you kept to the constraint. That is on you, and the exercise is worthless if you drift.
- Constraints are generic rather than instrument-specific — a restriction on range means something different on a piano and a trumpet, and you will need to interpret it.
- There is no backing track and no metronome. Improvising over silence is a different and harder exercise than improvising over changes.
- Nothing here teaches you to improvise. It gives structured practice to somebody who already has the basic vocabulary.
- Some constraints will not suit some instruments at all. Draw again rather than forcing one that does not apply.
Common mistakes
- Abandoning the constraint when it gets uncomfortable
- The discomfort is the exercise. The first thirty seconds use your existing habits; everything after that is new, and that is the part you came for.
- Only drawing note-choice constraints
- Rhythm is where most players are weakest and note choice is where most practice goes. Set the constraint type to rhythm for a week and the difference is obvious.
- Playing for thirty seconds and drawing again
- Two minutes minimum. Running out of ideas is the point at which the exercise starts working, and stopping there is stopping at the beginning.
Practical tips
- Record yourself. Under a severe constraint you will play things you do not notice at the time, and some of them are worth keeping.
- Use the same constraint for a whole week rather than a new one daily. Depth on one restriction beats a tour of twenty.

Troubleshooting
- The constraint does not make sense on my instrument
- Some will not — a restriction on sustain means little on a drum kit. Draw again, or set the constraint type to one that applies.
- I run out of ideas immediately
- Good. Keep playing anyway. The first ideas are the ones you already had; what comes after running out is the material the exercise exists to find.
Privacy and your data
Nothing is entered and nothing is stored. Constraints are drawn in your browser and analytics records only that the tool was used along with the strictness chosen — never what you drew or played.
Frequently asked questions
- Why would I want fewer options?
- Because unlimited options produce your defaults. Every improviser has a set of phrases their hands reach for, and with the whole instrument available those phrases are what comes out. Removing most of the instrument forces you past them within about thirty seconds, which is why constraint practice is standard in jazz teaching.
- How long should I stay on one constraint?
- At least two minutes per attempt, and ideally the same constraint across a whole practice week. Constraints reward depth: the fifth day of three-note improvising sounds nothing like the first.
- How is this different from the melody generator?
- The melody generator gives you notes. This gives you a rule and leaves the notes to you. One produces material to work on, the other shapes what you produce yourself — and for improvisers the second is much more useful.
- Is there a right way to interpret a constraint?
- No, and interpreting one strictly or loosely is itself a choice worth making deliberately. If a rule is ambiguous on your instrument, pick the stricter reading — it is almost always the more productive one.
