Language to Learn Generator
Suggests a random widely-taught language as a starting point if you're looking for a new one to learn, whether for travel, study or curiosity.
What this generator does
Picks a language to consider learning, for anyone who wants the decision taken out of their hands. It picks the language, not the method — that is a much longer question.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 18 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Spanish
- German
- Korean
- Russian
- Swedish
- Turkish
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 18, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated list of widely-spoken world languages. Last reviewed 2026-08-03.
How to use this tool

- Generate again if you'd like another option.

How this generator works
Draws one of eighteen widely-taught languages, all drawn with equal likelihood — Welsh is exactly as likely as Mandarin Chinese, despite the huge difference in speaker numbers. A seed word brings the same suggestion back later for as long as the generator is unchanged. Seeding trades the secure draw for a repeatable, non-cryptographic sequence, which is what a worksheet needs.
Limitations and good to know
- Eighteen languages is a curated, widely-taught subset, not a list of the world's most-spoken languages by speaker count — several major world languages are not included, and several included ones have comparatively few speakers.
- Nothing here weighs difficulty, available resources or how easy the language is to practise where you live — that judgement is entirely yours to make afterwards.
Practical tips
- Check what resources exist for the result before committing; a language with a thin learning ecosystem is a much harder start.
- Consider who you would actually speak it with. A language with no one to practise on rarely survives the first month.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
