Medieval Name Generator

Generates a random medieval-style name paired with a fictional place of origin — for historical fiction, tabletop RPGs, or worldbuilding set in a medieval-inspired era.

What this generator does

Pairs a period-styled given name with an invented place of origin, which is how most medieval European names actually worked before surnames settled down — you were John of somewhere, not John Somebody. The place is fictional on purpose, so the name cannot accidentally claim a real lineage.

What it builds, and how many ways

Each result is assembled to this shape: [first] + [place].

  • first: 30 options
  • place: 22 options

Taken together those banks can be assembled 660 different ways, repeating after about 32.

Some results it can produce:

  • Aldric of Redmere
  • Gwyneth of Wrayborne
  • Alys of Blackmoor
  • Godwin of Marchford

A fixed sample so this page stays the same between visits. Your own results are assembled at random, each slot filled independently and each press independent of the last, so the same result can come up twice — past the repeat figure above, seeing one twice is more likely than not.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a medieval name.
  2. Generate again for a different one.

Common use cases

  • Historical fiction writing
  • Tabletop RPG character naming
  • Renaissance-fair or LARP character names

Assumptions this tool makes

  • The naming convention modelled here is Western European and roughly eleventh to fourteenth century; other regions and periods worked quite differently.
  • The place of origin is invented rather than drawn from a real gazetteer.

Each part of the result is chosen independently with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every option in a bank is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
