Mountain Name Generator
Generates a random fictional mountain or peak name — useful for worldbuilding, fantasy maps, or naming a fictional range.
What this generator does
Names an invented peak or range. Mountain names are unusually literal in most languages — they describe a shape, a colour, a danger or a resemblance — so the word bank leans descriptive rather than decorative, which is what stops the results sounding like spell names.
What it builds, and how many ways
Each result is assembled to this shape: [element] — one of 4 sentence patterns this generator uses.
- element: 24 options
- generic: 17 options
Taken together those banks can be assembled 864 different ways, repeating after about 37.
Some results it can produce:
- Mount Ashgrey
- Eaglestone Knott
- The Buttress of Yewdale
- Sheepfold
A fixed sample so this page stays the same between visits. Your own results are assembled at random, each slot filled independently and each press independent of the last, so the same result can come up twice — past the repeat figure above, seeing one twice is more likely than not.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a mountain name.
- Generate again for another option.
Common use cases
- Fiction and game worldbuilding
- Fantasy map-making
- Naming a fictional setting
Limitations and good to know
- It names a single peak, not a range, and the two are named differently in most real traditions — a range usually takes its name from a region or a people rather than from a shape.
- There is no altitude, terrain or climate attached, so nothing constrains the name to a mountain that could actually exist where you put it.
Each part of the result is chosen independently with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every option in a bank is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
