Manuscript Paper Generator
Blank manuscript paper is sold in one size, which is rarely the size you want. A beginner needs staves twice as tall as a copyist does, and somebody sketching a guitar part wants six lines above five. This draws whichever you need, with the stave size in millimetres and the systems spaced evenly down the page.
What this generator does
Works out how tall one system is from the lines it contains, spreads the systems evenly between the margins, and draws them as an SVG measured in millimetres.
How to use this tool
- Pick a single stave, a braced grand stave, guitar or bass tab, or a stave over tab.
- Choose the page size and how many systems to fit down it.
- Set the gap between the lines of a stave — printed music is about 1.8mm.
- Download the SVG and print it at 100%.
Understanding the controls
- Kind of paper
- A single five-line stave, two braced together as a grand stave, six-line guitar tab, four-line bass tab, or a stave over tab for writing rhythm with the fingering.
- Page size
- A4, A3, A5, US Letter or US Legal. The drawing is measured in millimetres so it prints at true size.
- Systems down the page
- How many systems to fit. The space left over is divided evenly between them, and settings that leave no room to write are refused rather than squeezed.
- Line gap in millimetres
- The distance between the lines within one stave, which is what sets how large the notes will be. Published music sits near 1.8mm; a beginner is better served by three or four.
- Margin in millimetres
- How much blank edge to leave around the staves, which is also where a title or a name goes.

How this generator works
The height of one system follows from the lines it holds and the wider brace gap between paired staves; the remaining height is divided evenly to space the systems. The two spacings are then measured separately off the finished drawing, because confusing them is the way this goes wrong: every gap within a stave must be identical, and the gaps between systems identical to each other and larger.
Randomness and fairness
Nothing here is drawn at random — no notes, no rhythms, just the ruling. The same settings give the same sheet every time.

Limitations and good to know
- Clefs, key signatures and bar lines are not drawn — this is blank paper to write on.
- Printing scaled to fit changes the stave size, so print at 100%.
- Sixteen systems is the limit, beyond which nothing is left to write between them.
- The staves come out as an SVG rather than a PDF, which every browser prints and every word processor will place.
Privacy and your data
The paper is drawn in your browser from the sizes you pick. Nothing is uploaded, and no settings are kept.
