Draws a suspect with a reason for suspicion attached, which is what distinguishes a suspect from a character who happens to be present. Four of the eight state a motive (the business partner, the dismissed employee, the rival, the estranged sibling); the others give a past that does not add up, a loyalty in doubt, knowledge they should not have, or an alibi that is too convenient. In a fair-play mystery every suspect needs a reason a reader could believe, because a cast where only one person has a motive has already given the answer away.

Limitations and good to know

• Eight profiles is a small set; a mystery with a larger suspect list will need repeat draws, checked against each other for overlap.
• The profile gives a reason for suspicion, not a timeline or physical evidence — those still need building separately, or drawn from the mystery clue generator. One of the eight is an alibi; none of the others has one.
