Nature Scavenger Hunt Generator
Suggests a specific thing to spot in nature — a colour, a texture, a sign of animal life — for turning any outdoor walk into a small scavenger hunt.
What this generator does
Draws an item to find outdoors — something to spot rather than something to take. That distinction is deliberate: a hunt that involves picking things damages the place it happens in, and looking is the part that teaches anybody anything.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 8 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Find something that's exactly the same colour as the sky.
- Find three different leaf shapes.
- Find something that makes a sound when you touch it.
- Find something rough and something smooth.
- Find the smallest living thing you can spot.
- Find something that looks completely out of place in nature.
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 8, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random — general nature scavenger-hunt prompts, no location data.. Last reviewed 2026-07-18.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a prompt.
- Look for it on your next walk.
Common use cases
- Family nature walks
- Making a walk more engaging for children
- Outdoor-learning activities
Randomness and fairness
Items are drawn uniformly with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with no awareness of season, habitat or region — so some draws will not be findable where and when you are looking.
For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Practical tips
- Draw five or six for a hunt and accept that one or two will be impossible; the searching is the activity.
- Spot and photograph rather than collect. Take nothing living, and leave nests, burrows and fungi where they are.
- In spring, keep to paths and away from nesting birds regardless of what the list says.
