One-on-One Question Generator

Generates a thoughtful question for a one-on-one check-in between a manager and a team member — support-focused, not an evaluation tool.

What this generator does

Draws a question for a one-to-one. These meetings default to a status update, which both people can get from a ticket board — a question is what makes it a different conversation.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • What's one thing that would make your week easier right now?
  • What's something you're proud of since we last spoke?
  • What's one piece of feedback you'd like to give me?
  • What's something you'd like more support with?
  • What's a skill you'd like to develop over the next few months?
  • What's one thing going well that we should keep doing?

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random.. Last reviewed 2026-07-19.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a one-on-one question.

Common use cases

  • Manager/employee check-ins
  • Making a regular 1:1 feel less repetitive
  • Structuring an informal catch-up

Randomness and fairness

Questions are drawn uniformly with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with no grading by how personal they are or by the relationship between the two people. Read a draw before asking it.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Practical tips

  • One question, and then stop talking. The silence after it is where the answer comes from.
  • Send it beforehand for anything that needs thinking about; asking cold gets a cold answer.
  • Do not ask a question you are not prepared to act on.

A support-focused conversation starter only — never used to score, rank or evaluate any employee.
