How this generator works
A number is assembled from a prefix, a year and a sequence, in the order that makes the result sort chronologically as plain text. That order is the whole design consideration in a purchase-order scheme: a system that puts the sequence first produces numbers that sort into nonsense the moment there is more than one year of them.
Limitations and good to know
- A generated reference will not match anything in a real purchasing system, and should not be used to raise an actual order.
- Example numbers for templates and mock-ups; they correspond to no order and are not reserved.
- The sequence part is drawn rather than incremented, so two draws can repeat and the numbers say nothing about how many orders exist.
- Any real purchase-order scheme needs to guarantee uniqueness, which needs a counter somebody owns.
