Random Die Type Picker
Picks a random standard die type from the common polyhedral set (d4 through d100) — handy for game design brainstorming or simply deciding which die to reach for.
What this generator does
Picks one of the standard polyhedral dice rather than rolling one, for the moment in a game or a lesson when the question is which die to use.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a die type.
- Generate again for another one.
Worked examples
- Set
- d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20
Common use cases
- Game design brainstorming
- Deciding which die to use for a house rule
- General curiosity
How this generator works
A die is drawn from the polyhedral set actually used at a table — d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and the percentile d100 — rather than from every mathematically possible solid. That restriction is the useful one: a fair die needs faces that are all equivalent to each other, and beyond the five Platonic solids plus a couple of practical exceptions, dice stop being fair.
Limitations and good to know
- This picks which die to use; it does not roll it.
- The d10 and d100 are not Platonic solids — a d10 is a trapezohedron, which is fair because its faces are equivalent even though they are not regular polygons.
- Each die type is equally likely, which is nothing like how often each is used in any actual game.
