What this generator does

  2. Toggle whether repeated words are allowed.
  3. Generate to see your words.

Worked examples

How this generator works

Words are drawn from the same 178-word list this site's passphrase generator uses, because that list was already curated for exactly the properties a good writing prompt also needs: common, unambiguous, easy to spell and read aloud. With 'allow duplicates' off, each word is removed from the pool once picked, so a request for several words never repeats one — turn it on and each draw is independent instead.

Limitations and good to know

  • The list is general vocabulary rather than a dictionary, so it will not contain every valid word, and a word it gives you may still be disallowed by a particular game's word list.
  • It is a fixed pool of 178 words shared with this site's passphrase tools, chosen for being short and unambiguous rather than for range — expect the same words to recur across separate sessions. A single request is capped at 50 words, well inside the pool.
