Spoonerism Generator

A spoonerism swaps the openings of two words and leaves everything else exactly where it was: a well-oiled bicycle becomes a well-boiled icicle. That “exactly where it was” is the whole trick and the easy thing to get wrong, so this swaps whole consonant clusters rather than single letters, and checks the result by confirming the two endings are untouched and the two openings have genuinely changed places.

Understanding the controls

Phrase: Two to twelve words. At least two of them must begin with a consonant, since a word starting with a vowel has no opening sound to trade.
Surprise me: Loads a phrase from a built-in list chosen because every one of them has two words that can swap.

How this generator works

Each word is split into its onset — the consonants before its first vowel — and the rest. Two words are chosen at random from those that have an onset, and their onsets are exchanged. The check runs three ways: every other word must be character-for-character unchanged, each swapped word must now carry the other's opening, and each must still carry its own ending. Because only the openings move, swapping the same pair again returns the phrase exactly as it started.

Randomness and fairness

Which two words are swapped is chosen with the browser's cryptographic random source, so a phrase of three or more words gives a different swap each run.

Limitations and good to know

Openings are read from spelling rather than pronunciation, so a swap can produce something that looks right and sounds odd.
Words beginning with a vowel have no opening to trade and are skipped; a phrase with fewer than two consonant-initial words is refused.
It cannot tell whether the result is funny, or whether it accidentally spells something you would rather it did not.
Only two words are ever swapped, however long the phrase is.
