Stableford Score Calculator
Stableford is points against your own par, and the part people get wrong in the clubhouse is not the points — it is the shots. They go by stroke index, one to each hole from the hardest down, then round again, so a player off 22 gets two shots on the four hardest holes and one everywhere else. Do that by eye and the card is wrong before the points are counted.
What this generator does
Gives every hole a shot for each full pass of the stroke index, plus one more if its index falls inside the remainder, then converts each net score into points.
How to use this tool
- Choose 9 or 18 holes and type your playing handicap.
- The card starts with a standard set of pars and stroke indexes — change them to your course.
- Type your score on each hole; leave a hole at zero if you did not finish it.
- Read the points, and the shots you were entitled to on each hole.
Understanding the controls
- Holes
- Nine or eighteen. Over nine holes the shots are spread over nine stroke indexes rather than eighteen, which is why a nine-hole handicap is not simply half.
- Playing handicap
- The whole number of shots you are receiving today, after any competition allowance. This is what gets spread across the card.
- Par and stroke index
- The card starts with a typical course and should be changed to the one you are playing. The stroke indexes must run from 1 to the number of holes with none repeated, which is checked.
- Score on each hole
- Your gross score. Leave a hole at zero and it is treated as not played, so it neither scores nor counts towards the totals.

How this generator works
The shots on a hole are the handicap divided by the number of holes, rounded down, plus one more if the hole's stroke index is inside the remainder. Two things follow from that and both are checked: the shots given across the card add up to exactly the handicap, and no hole with an easier stroke index gets more shots than a harder one. Net is gross less shots, and the points come from the standard table — two for a net par, three for a net birdie, one for a net bogey, nothing worse. A hole scoring nothing is flagged as a pick-up, which is the convention rather than a rule.
Randomness and fairness
Nothing is random. The same card and handicap always give the same points.

Limitations and good to know
- This is Stableford scoring, not handicap calculation: your playing handicap comes from your club or your app.
- Competition allowances, such as playing off ninety-five per cent, must be applied before you type the handicap in.
- Nine-hole stroke indexes vary by course; the default here simply numbers them in order and should be replaced.
- Team formats, better ball and modified Stableford all score differently.
Privacy and your data
The card is scored in your browser. No scores or handicaps are transmitted or stored.
