Everything else in this category helps you decide what to write. This one starts after that, with the question that actually stalls a draft: how long is each part supposed to be? Take a structure's percentages, apply them to your target, round each one, and the parts no longer add up to the book — which is a small error that quietly moves every chapter boundary. This divides in whole words so the parts sum to the target exactly, and shows which words each part covers.
What this generator does
Applies a structure's conventional proportions to a word target and reports whole-word budgets, the word range each part covers, and how many chapters fall in each. The closest thing already here is the chapter title generator, which names chapters; this one sizes them. Unlike a percentage typed into a spreadsheet, the parts are guaranteed to sum to the target — the division is integer and the leftover words are handed out one at a time rather than rounded away.

Understanding the controls
- Target length (words)
- The finished manuscript. Every other figure is derived from it, so changing it rescales the whole plan rather than shifting one part.
- Chapters
- Optional. Chapters are apportioned by the same shares as the words, so a part holding a quarter of the book gets about a quarter of the chapters — and the chapter counts sum exactly too. Set it to zero and the chapter column disappears rather than showing zeroes.
- Structure
- Changes the proportions and the names, not the arithmetic. Three-act puts half the book in the middle; Freytag's pyramid makes the climax the shortest part; kishōtenketsu divides into four equal quarters and is the one option here not built on conflict. Even parts applies no structure at all.

- 20,000 / 40,000 / 20,000 — the middle is half the book.
- 100,000 words, Freytag
- 15,000 / 30,000 / 10,000 / 30,000 / 15,000. The climax is the shortest part, not the longest.

- About 2,083 words a chapter, with the chapter counts per act summing to exactly 24.

How this generator works
Each part's exact share is the target multiplied by its proportion, which is almost never a whole number. Taking the floor of every share always under-allocates, and by strictly fewer words than there are parts — so the leftover is small and positive, and it is handed out one word at a time to the parts that lost the most to rounding. That is the largest-remainder method, the same rule used for apportioning seats, and it means the parts sum to the target by construction rather than by luck. Chapters are apportioned over the same shares by the same rule. Nothing is random: the same target and structure always give the same budget, which matters for a plan you write down and come back to in a month.
Randomness and fairness
Nothing here is random. This is arithmetic on a target and a set of proportions, and the same inputs always produce the same budget — which is the point, because a plan that changed every time you loaded it would be useless.

Assumptions this tool makes
- A word count is a useful proxy for length. For picture books, poetry or screenplays it is not, and a page or minute count would serve better.
Limitations and good to know
- It divides a number. It has no opinion about whether the story works, and a book that hits every proportion exactly can still be badly paced.
- The proportions are teaching conventions, not laws or research findings. Published novels vary enormously and the good ones frequently ignore them.
- It does not model scenes, beats or viewpoint — only the lengths of the named parts.
- Modern proprietary beat sheets are not included. Their specific beat names and percentages are somebody's copyrighted work, and reproducing them here would be republishing rather than citing.
- Chapter budgets are averages across a part. Real chapters vary in length and should.
Common mistakes
- Treating the proportions as a rule the book has to obey
- They are where tension usually sits in stories that already worked, described afterwards. Use the budget as a starting division to argue with — a middle running long is information, not a failure.
- Rounding the percentages yourself
- That is what this avoids. Twenty-five percent of 80,001 is 20,000.25, and rounding each part independently either loses words or invents them, which shifts every subsequent chapter boundary by an amount nobody tracks.
Practical tips
- If your draft's middle is much shorter than the budget, that is usually the real problem rather than the ending everyone blames.
- Set chapters to a number you might actually write, not a round one — 24 chapters of 2,083 is a more useful target than 25 of 2,000 if the book is 50,000 words.
- Try kishōtenketsu for a story that has no antagonist. Forcing a conflict structure onto it is how those drafts stall.
Privacy and your data
Only numbers and a menu choice are entered, and they never leave your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or written into the page address. Analytics records that the tool ran and how many parts it produced, never your target or your structure.
Frequently asked questions
- Which structure should I use?
- If you do not already have one in mind, three-act, because it is the one most editorial feedback is phrased in. Freytag's pyramid is more useful for tragedy and for short fiction, where the falling action carries real weight. Kishōtenketsu is worth trying for anything that is not about conflict — it is a genuinely different shape rather than the same one renamed.
- Where do the percentages come from?
- They are stated on the page for each structure. The three-act quarter/half/quarter split is a twentieth-century screenwriting convention; Freytag described the five-part shape in Die Technik des Dramas in 1863 but did not prescribe lengths, so those proportions are a conventional reading of his curve rather than his numbers; kishōtenketsu's even quarters are the usual teaching division of a traditional form. None of them is a finding.
- Why do the parts always add up exactly?
- Because the division is done in whole words rather than percentages. Each part gets the floor of its share, which leaves a few words over — always fewer than there are parts — and those are given out one at a time to the parts that lost most to rounding. It sums correctly by construction, and the test suite checks it across every target from zero to two thousand for every structure.
- Can I use this for a screenplay?
- The proportions transfer, but the unit does not. Screenplays are measured in pages, at roughly a minute a page, so a 110-page script under a three-act split is about 27 / 55 / 27 pages. Enter 110 as the target and read the results as pages.
