Symbolic Object Generator

Generates a random everyday object carrying quiet symbolic weight — a small, concrete detail to anchor an emotional beat in a story.

What this generator does

Draws an ordinary object that can carry weight in a story. The ones that work are objects with a plain practical reason to be present, because symbolism a reader notices as symbolism stops working — the object has to be a real object first and a symbol only in retrospect.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 14 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • A key that no longer opens anything, kept out of habit
  • An unfinished letter, never sent
  • A watch that stopped at a specific, significant time
  • A ticket stub kept long after the event
  • A library book, years overdue and never returned
  • A chair that's never sat in, kept exactly as it was left

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 14, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random.. Last reviewed 2026-07-19.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a symbolic object.

Worked examples

A drawn object
"A chipped mug that was always 'the good one'"

Common use cases

  • Grounding an emotional scene in a concrete detail
  • Writing exercises focused on subtext
  • Poetry and flash-fiction prompts

Limitations and good to know

  • 14 objects in total. "Don't repeat what I've already seen" is on by default, so a session works through all 14 before any repeat, then the pool starts over.
  • The object is given without the meaning attached — deciding what it symbolises for your specific story is left entirely to you.

Practical tips

  • Give it three appearances: once as itself, once when it is noticed, once when it matters. Objects that appear only at the significant moment read as props.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
