Unit Conversion Question Generator

Builds a sheet of metric conversion questions at the level you ask for. Amounts are chosen so that every answer is a whole number, and each question is checked by converting back. Every question is computed and checked directly — not a fabricated or AI-guessed fact.

What this generator does

Generates unit conversion questions with answers — length, mass, capacity and time. Time is included with the metric units on purpose, because it is the one system that is not decimal and the one students convert wrongly by treating it as though it were.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a level and how many questions you want.
  2. Press make questions and work through the sheet.
  3. Show the answers to mark it, or show the working to see whether the step multiplies or divides, and by what.
  4. Enter a seed word to rebuild the same sheet later.

Randomness and fairness

Quantities are drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator and are always a multiple of the conversion factor, so no answer lands on a decimal. A seed word rebuilds the same sheet later; it is for reproducibility, not cryptographic strength, so a seeded sheet is deterministic rather than unpredictable.

Limitations and good to know

  • Metric only. An inch is exactly 25.4 mm but a pound is 453.59237 g, and a sheet that mixes exact and rounded conversions teaches that the arithmetic is approximate when the whole point of the topic is that it is not.
  • Amounts always divide exactly. Real measurements do not, and converting 3,750 g to kilograms is a decimals question this sheet will not set you.
  • Area and volume units are not converted here. The factor is squared or cubed, which trips almost everyone and makes it a different exercise rather than a harder level of this one — the unit converter does those, and shows the factor it used.

Common mistakes

Converting time as if it were decimal
2.5 hours is 2 hours 30 minutes, not 2 hours 50. Time runs in sixties, not tens.
Multiplying when you should divide
Going to a smaller unit gives a bigger number. Check the answer against that before writing it down.
