Wizard Name Generator
Generates a random wizard or sorcerer name in a 'Name the Epithet' style — for fantasy writing, tabletop RPGs or roleplay.
What this generator does
Produces a name in the 'Name the Epithet' form — a personal name followed by a descriptive title — because that two-part shape is what makes a wizard name read as a wizard name rather than as any other fantasy character. The epithet carries the character work: it hints at a speciality, a reputation or a rumour.
What it builds, and how many ways
Each result is assembled to this shape: [first] + [epithet] — one of 3 sentence patterns this generator uses.
- first: 26 options
- epithet: 16 options
- order: 6 options
Taken together those banks can be assembled 3,068 different ways, repeating after about 69.
Some results it can produce:
- Alaric the Unwilling
- Drusilla, of the Ninth House
- Ignatius the Unwilling, of the Amber Order
- Nyx the Sleepless
A fixed sample so this page stays the same between visits. Your own results are assembled at random, each slot filled independently and each press independent of the last, so the same result can come up twice — past the repeat figure above, seeing one twice is more likely than not.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a wizard name.
- Generate again for a different one.
Common use cases
- Fantasy writing
- Tabletop RPG character naming
- Roleplay or game character design
Practical tips
- Treat the epithet as a prompt rather than a label. A wizard called the Patient earned that name somehow, and deciding how is half a character.
- Drop the epithet when the wizard is being addressed by someone who knows them well; keeping it everywhere makes dialogue stilted.
Each part of the result is chosen independently with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every option in a bank is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
