Area Question Generator
Builds a sheet of area questions at the level you ask for, with the working and the answers hidden until you want them. Bases and parallel sides are chosen so that halving stays whole, so no answer needs rounding. Each question and its answer are computed directly, not guessed or approximated, so you can trust the number that gets revealed.
What this generator does
Generates area questions with answers, for rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapeziums and L-shapes. Every answer carries square units, because losing the units is where a substantial share of the marks go in this topic — and the sheet is checked for that before you see it.
How to use this tool
- Choose a level and how many questions you want.
- Press make questions and work through the sheet.
- Show the answers to mark it, or show the working to see which formula each question needs.
- Enter a seed word to rebuild the same sheet later.

Randomness and fairness
Dimensions are drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator within the level's range, then constrained: a triangle gets an even base and a trapezium gets parallel sides that sum to an even number, so halving never produces a fraction. A seed word rebuilds the same sheet later; it is there for reproducibility, not cryptographic strength, and a seeded sheet is deterministic rather than unpredictable.

Limitations and good to know
- There are no diagrams. Each shape is described in words, which works on paper and in your head but is not the same as reading a measured drawing.
- Circles are not included. A circle's area brings pi in, and every answer here is a whole number a pupil can check without a calculator.
- The perpendicular height is always given directly. Questions that make you find the height first are a separate skill this does not cover.
Common mistakes
- Using a slanted side as the height of a triangle
- The height is the perpendicular distance to the base, not the length of the sloping edge. In a diagram it is usually the dashed line.
- Forgetting to halve for a triangle
- Base times height gives the surrounding rectangle. The triangle is half of it.
