Volume Question Generator

Builds a sheet of volume questions at the level you ask for, with the working and the answers hidden until you want them. Every volume comes out whole, and every answer carries cubic units. Every question is computed and checked directly — not a fabricated or AI-guessed fact.

What this generator does

Generates volume questions with answers, for cubes, cuboids and prisms. The prisms are the point of it: once a pupil sees that a volume is a cross-section carried along a length, a triangular prism and an L-shaped one stop being separate formulas to remember.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a level and how many questions you want.
  2. Press make questions and work through the sheet.
  3. Show the answers to mark it, or show the working to see the cross-section each prism is built from.
  4. Enter a seed word to rebuild the same sheet later.

Randomness and fairness

Dimensions are drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator within the level's range, and a triangular cross-section always gets an even base so that halving it stays whole. A seed word rebuilds the same sheet later; it is there for reproducibility, not cryptographic strength, and a seeded sheet is deterministic rather than unpredictable.

Limitations and good to know

  • Cylinders are not included. A cylinder's volume brings pi in, and every answer here is a whole number a pupil can check without a calculator.
  • There are no diagrams; each solid is described in words. An L-shaped cross-section in particular is worth sketching before working on it.
  • Surface area is a different question and is not asked here.

Common mistakes

Using square units for a volume
Volume is three-dimensional, so the units are cubed. Marks are lost for this more often than for the arithmetic.
Multiplying all the numbers in a prism question together
Work out the cross-section first, then multiply by the length. In an L-shaped prism the five numbers are not five factors — four of them describe one area.
