Blind Ranking Challenge Generator

Items appear one at a time and each one has to go straight into a numbered slot in your final ranking — before you have any idea what is coming next. Put your first item at number one and you have nothing left for something better; play it safe at number five and you may waste the spot. Pick a ready-made category or paste your own list.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a built-in category, or select 'My own list' and paste your items one per line.
  2. Pick a top 5 or top 10, and decide whether to allow forgiving mode's two swaps.
  3. Press Start. One item is revealed at a time.
  4. Tap a numbered position to commit the revealed item to it. Filled positions cannot be reused.
  5. When every position is filled, copy the finished ranking to share it — then restart the same draw or reshuffle for a new one.

Common use cases

  • A quick party or games-night round that needs no equipment and no setup
  • An icebreaker that reveals people's preferences and gets an argument going
  • A group activity where everyone plays the same draw and compares final lists
  • A classroom or team warm-up using a list you write for the occasion
  • Settling 'what's your actual top five' with a rule that stops endless reordering

Examples

A finished round
1. Otter · 2. Octopus · 3. Barn owl · 4. Hedgehog · 5. Capybara
The dilemma
First item revealed: 'Puffin'. Position 1 is open — but so are nine others, and there are nine animals you haven't seen.

How this generator works

When you press Start, the item pool is shuffled once with the browser's cryptographic random number generator and the first five or ten items are set aside as the round's draw. Only one of them is ever visible to you at a time: the rest stay hidden behind the reveal counter until you have committed the current one, so no amount of inspecting the page tells you what is coming. The ranking you produce is entirely your own decision-making — the tool contributes only the order in which the choices arrive.

Limitations and good to know

  • Every player in a group has to run their own round, since a reshuffle produces a different draw and there is no shared game state between devices.
  • There are no accounts, saved rankings or leaderboards; a finished ranking exists only until you restart or close the tab.
  • Forgiving mode's swaps can only exchange two positions that are already filled, so they soften a bad call without letting you defer a decision.
  • A top 10 needs at least ten items in the pool, so short custom lists are limited to the top 5 mode.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a random list picker?
A list picker chooses for you. Here the shuffle only decides the order in which items are revealed — every ranking decision is yours, made without knowing what is still to come. That missing information is the whole game.
Can I change a position after I've filled it?
Not in the default mode: every choice is final, which is what makes the early positions a genuine gamble. Turning on forgiving mode gives you two swaps between positions you have already filled.
Can I use my own list?
Yes. Choose 'My own list' and paste one item per line. Blank lines and duplicates are ignored, and you need at least as many items as positions in the ranking.
What is the difference between restart and reshuffle?
Restart clears the board but keeps the same items in the same reveal order, so you can try different decisions against an identical draw. Reshuffle draws a completely new set and order from your item pool.
Is my list sent anywhere?
No. The game runs entirely in your browser. Anything you paste in stays on your device and is never uploaded or stored.
