Character Flaw Generator

Supplies a character's weakness or contradiction rather than their strength — the half of a character that actually generates plot — for turning a cardboard-cutout hero into someone who can be wrong about things.

What this generator does

Supplies the weakness rather than the strength, which is the half that generates plot. Pairs directly with the character trait generator; most memorable characters are the collision of one of each.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 30 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Cannot admit when they're wrong
  • Impulsive to the point of recklessness
  • Puts everyone else first, to their own detriment
  • Cannot leave a kindness unreturned, or an insult
  • Spends money to feel in control
  • Hides behind jokes when things get serious

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 30, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated character-flaw list for creative writing. Last reviewed 2026-10-01.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a new flaw.
  2. Generate again any time for a new one.

Common use cases

  • Deepening a fictional character
  • Tabletop RPG character creation
  • Classroom character-study exercises

Randomness and fairness

Flaws are drawn with your browser's cryptographic random source by default. Typing a seed word switches to a deterministic, non-cryptographic draw instead, so you can hand a co-writer the same flaw by sharing the word rather than retyping it.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Limitations and good to know

  • 30 flaws are in the pool, so generating repeatedly in one sitting will work through all of them before the tool restarts the pool and says so.

Practical tips

  • Give the flaw a cost that lands in the story. A flaw with no consequence is a personality note, not a flaw.
  • The most useful flaws are the ones adjacent to a strength — the same quality helping and harming is what makes a character feel real.
