Connect the Dots Generator

A join-the-dots picture is a promise: start at one, keep going, and you will have drawn something. This makes the picture first and the dots afterwards, so the promise holds. The dots are placed on the corners before anywhere else — a roof with no dot on its point joins up into a shed — and the rest are shared out along the sides so the spacing stays even. Two dots close enough to be mistaken for one become a single dot, and two numbers that would print on top of each other are not allowed onto the page at all. The pictures themselves are drawn here from circles, arcs and straight lines rather than taken from a picture library or produced by an AI model, so a sheet you make is yours to print, hand out or sell without licensing anything or crediting anyone.

What this generator does

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a picture and how hard you want the sheet to be.
  2. Set how many dots you want, anywhere from ten to ninety.

Understanding the controls

Picture
Which drawing the dots go round. It changes the shape entirely, not just the label at the top.
Difficulty
How much of the shape gets drawn. A harder setting means more curves and more corners to go round, not a fainter line.
How many dots
Up to ninety. If the picture cannot carry that many without the numbers crowding, you get the most it will take rather than an unreadable sheet.
Print the small marks
Adds the eyes, windows and other details to the puzzle sheet so the finished picture has some life in it.
Seed
A word gives back exactly the same picture with exactly the same numbering, which is what you want for thirty copies.

Randomness and fairness

The figure and the placement of its dots come from your browser's cryptographic random source unless you give a seed, in which case the same seed redraws the same picture with the dots numbered identically — that is reproducibility, not cryptographic strength.

Limitations and good to know

  • These are geometric figures rather than portraits. A house, a star or a kite comes out well; nobody is going to get a recognisable dinosaur or a named breed of dog out of this.
  • The pictures are simple line drawings built from circles, arcs and straight sides. They are not detailed illustrations, and they are not characters from books or films.
  • A few pictures cannot be told in ten dots — a spiral is the obvious one — and at the easiest setting those come back and ask you to choose another.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell the sheets I make?
Yes. The pictures are built here out of circles, arcs and straight lines, so there is no stock library behind them, no AI model, and nothing traced from anybody else’s artwork. Nothing needs licensing and there is no attribution to give. That is a deliberate choice about where the pictures come from rather than a promise about what you do with them once they are printed. It is worth being precise about why: the promise is not that you may sell whatever you make here, but that the picture itself carries nothing that could turn out to belong to somebody else. A tool that hands you a blank grid and lets you fill it can only promise the first half.
How many dots should a young child have?
Ten to twenty is usual for a child who has just learned their numbers, because the point is the counting as much as the drawing. Forty upwards suits a child who is confident to a hundred and wants the picture to be a surprise.
Will the finished picture actually look like the thing it says?
Yes, and that is checked rather than hoped for. The line you get by joining the dots in order is measured against the outline the dots were taken from, and a sheet where the two have drifted apart is never offered.
Can I print the same sheet again next term?
Type a word into the seed box. The same word always gives the same picture and the same numbering.
