Debate Team Generator
Randomly splits a group into exactly two named sides — 'For' and 'Against' — for a classroom or club debate, distinct from the generic random team generator's unnamed N-way split.
What this generator does
Splits people into opposing debate teams and assigns which side each argues. Assigning the side at random is the point — arguing a position you did not choose is the exercise.
How to use this tool

How this generator works
Names are shuffled once and dealt alternately: first to For, second to Against, and so on. With an odd number the extra speaker is always on For. Assigning the position at random is the part that matters for a debate: a team that chose its own side is arguing what it believes, which is a different and much easier exercise.
Limitations and good to know
- The shuffle is unbiased, but an unbiased split can still put every confident speaker on one side. A second draw is a legitimate response.
- Sizes are balanced as closely as the number of names allows; an odd number leaves one side larger.
- The draw is not stored, so the two sides are gone when the page closes. The list of names can be saved to this device first, from the panel on this page.
Privacy and your data
Participant names are split locally and never transmitted. Nothing is retained after you leave the page unless you press Save in the panel on it, which keeps the list of names in this browser only.
