Dog Name Generator
Generate random name ideas for a new dog or puppy, drawn from a curated list of popular dog names.
What this generator does
Draws from names that suit a dog specifically — short, distinct-sounding and easy to call across a park. That is a different list from the cat name generator, where a name never has to be shouted at distance.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 30 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Buddy
- Cooper
- Duke
- Ranger
- Otis
- Willow
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 30, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated list of popular dog names. Last reviewed 2026-07-24.
How to use this tool
- Choose how many name ideas you'd like.
- Generate for a fresh shortlist any time.
- Enter a seed word if you want the same list back later; leave it empty for a fresh draw.
Common use cases
- Naming a new dog or puppy
- Breaking a naming deadlock at home
- Finding inspiration beyond the obvious choices
Randomness and fairness
Names come from your browser's cryptographic random number generator. A seed makes the same shortlist come back later, so a family arguing over a name can return to the exact set they were arguing about. Deterministic by design and not cryptographic, so never a source of secrecy.
For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Practical tips
- Two syllables ending in a vowel carries best outdoors, which is why so many working dogs have names of that shape.
- Avoid anything that sounds like a common command. A dog called Beau will hear "no" and a dog called Kit will hear "sit".
- Try the shortlist at the volume you would actually use in a park before you commit to one.
