How this generator works

A name is drawn from lists built around what actually works when a name is called across a park: two syllables, a clear ending, and no close resemblance to a common command. The last constraint is the practical one — a dog called Beau hears 'no' in its own name, which is a small problem that lasts for years.

Randomness and fairness

Names come from the dog and cat lists together, drawn with your browser's cryptographic random number generator. A seed makes the draw repeatable, which suits a shortlist a household wants to come back to. The same word gives the same names to anybody: this is reproducibility, not cryptographic strength.

Limitations and good to know

• Suggestions only — a name that suits the animal in front of you matters more than a name from a list. Short names with a hard consonant are generally easier for a dog to recognise.
• A name that suits an animal in a list may not suit yours. Names are worth trying aloud before they are settled on.
• The lists are drawn from English-language naming habits and reflect those conventions.
• Every name is equally likely, which is nothing like how common these names actually are.
