European Capital Generator

Generates a random European capital city — for geography trivia or travel-planning inspiration.

What this generator does

Draws a European capital city. Useful for quizzes, geography practice and travel shortlists — and the list has to make judgement calls, because what counts as Europe depends on where you draw the line through Turkey, Russia and the Caucasus.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 20 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Paris, France
  • Madrid, Spain
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Oslo, Norway
  • Prague, Czech Republic
  • Bern, Switzerland

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 20, without repeating until the list runs out. Capital cities of European countries (public/factual list). Last reviewed 2026-08-17.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a capital.
  2. Generate again for another one.

Common use cases

  • Geography trivia
  • European trip-planning inspiration
  • Classroom geography activities

Randomness and fairness

Uniform across the list with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, with no weighting by size or familiarity, so Vaduz is as likely as Paris.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Limitations and good to know

  • Where Europe ends is genuinely contested, particularly around Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Any list takes a position.
  • Some countries have more than one capital in practice — a legislative one and an administrative one — and the list gives one.
  • It gives a city name, not a country, a population or anything else.
