World Capital Generator
Generates a random capital city from across the world's continents — for geography trivia or travel-planning inspiration.
What this generator does
Draws a capital city from anywhere in the world. Good for quiz writing and geography revision, where the value is in the tail: everyone knows twenty capitals, and the draw is far more likely to give you one of the other hundred and seventy.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 20 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Tokyo, Japan
- Brasília, Brazil
- New Delhi, India
- Wellington, New Zealand
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Rabat, Morocco
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 20, without repeating until the list runs out. Capital cities of world countries across every inhabited continent (public/factual list). Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a capital.
- Generate again for another one.
Common use cases
- Geography trivia
- Travel bucket-list inspiration
- Classroom geography activities
Randomness and fairness
Every capital on the list is equally likely, drawn with the browser's cryptographic random number generator. There is no weighting by population or prominence, which is deliberate — a weighted list would keep producing the same twenty.
For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Limitations and good to know
- Several countries have more than one capital, splitting legislative, executive and judicial functions between cities. The list gives the one most commonly cited.
- Which territories count as countries is politically contested in a number of cases.
- Capitals move. Any list needs periodic checking rather than being assumed current.
