Gym Exercise Generator
Suggests a single gym exercise — a machine or free-weight movement, from a squat rack to a cable machine — for adding variety to a session or breaking a routine rut before it goes stale.
What this generator does
Returns a single gym movement — machine or free weight — to slot into a session you are already running. It adds variety to a workout rather than designing one; the circuit generator is the tool that produces a whole session.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 12 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Barbell squat
- Deadlift
- Leg press
- Overhead press
- Leg curl machine
- Assisted pull-up
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 12, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated general gym-exercise list. Last reviewed 2026-07-25.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for an exercise.
- Generate again to build out the rest of the session.
Understanding the controls
- Seed
- Unless the generator has changed since, a word you type here brings back the same movement out of the twelve machine and free-weight exercises on the list. Leave it blank for a fresh draw. Drawing with a word puts it in the page address, so to hand someone the same exercise, send the link: it opens with the word in the box, ready for the button.
Worked examples
- A generated movement
- Barbell squat — one of twelve machine and free-weight movements the list draws from.
Common use cases
- Adding variety to a gym session
- Breaking a repetitive workout routine
- Quick exercise inspiration
Limitations and good to know
- Machine and free-weight movements are mixed together, and a gym may not stock every machine named — swap for an equivalent on your own equipment.
- No set, rep or weight guidance is given; it names the movement only, and programming it is yours to do.
- It does not know what you already trained this week, so two draws in a row can double up on the same muscle group.
Practical tips
- Check your form on an unfamiliar movement with light weight before loading it properly.
- Substitute the generated exercise for one working the same area, rather than adding it on top of a full session.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.

Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from the upper-body or lower-body generators?
- This draws from general gym equipment — machines, barbells, cables — without filtering by body area, so a single draw could be a squat or a lat pulldown. The upper- and lower-body generators are bodyweight-only and split by area, for sessions away from the gym.
- Can I use this to build a whole workout?
- You can generate several in a row, but nothing here balances push against pull or checks you're not repeating a muscle group — the one-rep-max calculator and your own judgement do the programming; this only supplies ideas.
