Long Division Worksheet Generator
A long division written as a line of text is a sum. Long division is a layout: the divisor outside the bracket, the number being divided under the bar, the answer built up digit by digit above it, and the remainder from each column carried and written small in front of the next digit. This rules that frame onto paper at the size you are printing, with room underneath to work in, and gives you an answer key that shows every intermediate remainder rather than only the result — because the intermediate remainders are where it goes wrong.
What this generator does
Draws the bus-stop frame itself rather than describing it. Each digit of the number being divided gets its own column, the answer digits sit directly above the digits they came from, and the answer key writes in the remainder carried into every column. Where the divisor does not go into the leading digit, the space above the bar is left blank exactly as it is by hand, which is the detail most printed sheets get wrong and the one that confuses people first.
How to use this tool
- Choose how many divisions you want, how big the divisor is, and how many digits the number being divided should have.
- Say whether remainders are allowed, and whether to leave space under each layout to work in.
- Pick the paper size, print size and margin you are printing on.
- Make the sheet, then print it. Only the sheet prints, not the page around it.
- Show the completed layouts when you want to mark it, and print those as a separate answer page.
Understanding the controls
- How many divisions
- One to thirty. Eight fills an A4 page with room to work under each one; twenty fits if you turn the working space off.
- Divisor
- One digit, from 3 to 9, or two digits, from 12 to 39. The two-digit case is a genuinely different exercise, because how many times the divisor goes in can no longer be recalled and has to be estimated.
- Digits in the number being divided
- Three to six. This is the same as the number of columns in the layout, so it is the setting that decides how long each division takes rather than how hard it is.
- Allow remainders
- Turned off, every division comes out exactly, which is the right start. Turned on, the sheet mixes exact ones with those that leave something over, so the last column has to be read rather than assumed.
- Leave space under each one to work in
- Adds a blank band beneath each frame. Without it more fit on a page, but the working has nowhere to go and ends up in the margin.
- Columns on the page
- One, two or three layouts across. Three is tight with six-digit numbers; one gives a whole page width to each division, which is what a child learning the method needs.
- Paper size, print size and margin
- The sheet is laid out to the paper you name, in millimetres, and only the sheet is printed — not the navigation, the introduction or anything else on this page.
- Seed
- A word rebuilds the identical sheet, which is how a whole class is given the same divisions without a file passing between anyone.

How this generator works
Each division is set out by walking the digits of the number being divided from the left. In every column the divisor goes into the carried remainder times ten plus that digit some whole number of times; that count is the digit written above the bar and what is left over is carried on. Before the sheet is drawn, every one of those digits is worked out a second time from the characters actually printed inside the bracket and beside it, rather than from the numbers the sheet started with — so a frame showing the right answer above the wrong number would be caught, which on a printed sheet is the mistake that matters, because the frame is the question. The quotient is also required to reach two digits, so nothing on the sheet is a times-table fact wearing a bus stop.
Randomness and fairness
The divisor and the number being divided are drawn independently and then filtered: anything whose answer is a single digit is thrown away and redrawn, as is anything already on the sheet. With remainders turned off the number being divided is reduced to the multiple of the divisor below it, which keeps the digit count and leaves the draw otherwise untouched. The same seed rebuilds the same worksheet, which is there for reproducibility, not cryptographic strength.

Limitations and good to know
- The layout stops at the decimal point. Carrying on past the units to give a decimal answer, rather than a remainder, is a further method and is not drawn.
- Divisors run from 3 to 9 or from 12 to 39. Dividing by 1 or 2 has no layout worth setting out, and a three-digit divisor makes each estimate a calculation of its own.
- The frame is drawn but the subtraction underneath it is not written out in full — the carried remainders are shown instead, which is how the bus-stop method is taught in Britain rather than the stacked American long form.
- Everything is positive whole numbers. Negative dividends and decimal dividends are not produced.
- A seed reproduces a sheet exactly, which is the point of it, and means seeded output is repeatable rather than unpredictable.
Common mistakes
- Losing a column when the divisor does not go into the leading digit
- Write nothing above the bar for that column and carry the whole digit across. The answer then has one digit fewer than the number being divided, which is correct.
- Carrying the wrong thing into the next column
- What is carried is the remainder, not the digit you just wrote above the bar. The answer key here writes both, in their places, so a wrong sheet can be diagnosed rather than just marked.
- Stopping at the last digit and forgetting the remainder
- Whatever the final column leaves over is the remainder, and it is always smaller than the divisor. If it is not, the last answer digit was too small.

The sheet is drawn inside your browser and printed from there. The settings and the seed you type are never uploaded, never stored and never sent to a server.
