Postcard Writing Prompt Generator

Suggests something to write about on a postcard — a meal, a local encounter, a surprising detail — beyond the standard 'weather's great, wish you were here'.

What this generator does

Draws an angle for a postcard — one specific thing to write about rather than a general report. Postcards are short enough that a single detail is the whole message, and 'the weather is nice' is what you write when you have not decided what the card is about.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Describe the best meal you've had so far
  • Describe the view from where you're sitting right now
  • Describe a local person you met and what they said
  • Describe the weather in a way that isn't just 'sunny' or 'rainy'
  • Mention something you wish you'd packed
  • Tell them about the strangest thing you've seen here

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated postcard-message prompt list. Last reviewed 2026-07-25.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a prompt.
  2. Write about it on your next postcard.

Common use cases

  • Writing a more memorable postcard
  • Travel journaling prompts
  • Keeping in touch while travelling

Randomness and fairness

Prompts are drawn uniformly with the browser's cryptographic random number generator.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Practical tips

  • Write the card on the day the thing happened, not at the end of the trip. Detail decays quickly.
  • One prompt per card. A postcard has room for about forty words and no more.
