Random First Name Generator
Generate random first names without specifying a gender — the broadest of the demographic name tools, good as a default when any given name will do. Names are drawn from an original, hand-curated list chosen for broad recognisability rather than any specific cultural or linguistic tradition.
What this generator does
Picks a first name from banks covering masculine, feminine and gender-neutral names, so the draw spans the whole range rather than one list. Useful for character naming, test data and classroom examples.
How to use this tool
- Choose how many names to generate.
- Generate to see your results.
- Enter a seed word if you want the same list back later; leave it empty for a fresh draw.
Worked examples
- Three banks
- Masculine, feminine and neutral name lists, drawn from together
Common use cases
- Naming a character for writing or games
- Placeholder names for forms or mockups
- Inspiration for baby names
Randomness and fairness
Names are drawn with your browser's cryptographic random number generator. Typing a seed swaps that for a deterministic draw: the same word gives the same names every time, which is how you hand two people the identical list without sending it to them. A seeded draw is deterministic, not cryptographic, and is not the tool for anything that needs to be unguessable.
For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Limitations and good to know
- Names are common Western given names and are not representative of any specific culture, era or region. A generated name may coincidentally match a real person.
