Random NPC Generator
Generate a complete quick NPC — name, personality trait, role and a memorable quirk — for improvising tabletop RPG sessions.
What this generator does
Assembles a whole non-player character in one press — a name, a role, a trait and a quirk together — rather than making you run four separate generators and stitch the results. That combination is the point: a name alone is not a character a table can talk to.
What it builds, and how many ways
Each result is assembled to this shape: [name] + [trait] + [role] + [quirk].
- name: 10 options
- quirk: 10 options
- role: 10 options
- trait: 10 options
Taken together those banks can be assembled 10,000 different ways, repeating after about 125.
Some results it can produce:
- Old Thistlewick, a gruff but fair town clerk who collects buttons obsessively.
- Sella Marrow, a unshakeably calm hedge wizard who hums constantly.
- Old Thistlewick, a overconfident gravedigger who claims to have met a dragon once.
- Sella Marrow, a world-weary ferryman who talks to an imaginary friend.
A fixed sample so this page stays the same between visits. Your own results are assembled at random, each slot filled independently and each press independent of the last, so the same result can come up twice — past the repeat figure above, seeing one twice is more likely than not.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a new NPC.
- Generate again any time you need another one on the fly.
Common use cases
- Improvising an NPC mid-session
- Populating a town or tavern with characters
- Game master prep
Practical tips
- Use the quirk as the thing the players actually notice. A role tells you what the character does; a quirk is what makes them memorable a session later.
- Reroll only the part that does not fit rather than the whole character — the pieces are independent.
- Generate three before a session and keep them in reserve. Improvising a name under pressure is where most NPCs end up called Bob.
Each part of the result is chosen independently with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every option in a bank is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
