What this generator does

Supplies where a character came from and what they did before the campaign, which is the part that gives a player something to roleplay. The class and race generators decide capability; this decides history.

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 12 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

Understanding the controls

Seed: Typing the same word reproduces the same background while the generator is unchanged, handy for writing it into character notes and pulling it up again later. The sequence is deterministic, not cryptographic.

Practical tips

Pick one detail from the background to bring up in the first session, so it becomes real rather than staying on the sheet.
Give the background a loose end the game master can use — a debt, a rival, a place you cannot return to.
