What this generator does

Picks the character's ancestry, which in most systems sets the starting traits and a good deal of the backstory. The counterpart to the class generator — one decides where a character comes from, the other what they do about it.

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 12 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

Understanding the controls

Seed: Type a word to reproduce the same race result while the generator is unchanged, so a game master can record it for a specific character and recall it later. The draw is deterministic, not cryptographic.

Limitations and good to know

Several entries are described generically ("Dragonborn-style", "Tiefling-style") rather than naming a publisher's specific race, since this is an unofficial, generic tool using long-standard terminology rather than any one system's proprietary lineage list.

Practical tips

Roll race and class together and build the character around the combination, including the awkward ones. Those explain themselves in interesting ways.
Check the result exists in the system you are actually playing before building around it.
