RPG Race Generator
Generates a random fantasy character race using generic, long-standard tabletop terminology — handy when rolling up a new character.
What this generator does
Picks the character's ancestry, which in most systems sets the starting traits and a good deal of the backstory. The counterpart to the class generator — one decides where a character comes from, the other what they do about it.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 12 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Human
- Dwarf
- Half-orc
- Half-elf
- Tiefling-style (fiend-touched)
- Merfolk (aquatic-adapted)
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 12, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated list of generic, long-standard tabletop-fantasy character races. Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool
- Press generate for a race.
- Use it for your character, or generate again for a different one.
Common use cases
- Rolling up a new tabletop RPG character
- Character-building workshops
- Writing fantasy characters
Practical tips
- Roll race and class together and build the character around the combination, including the awkward ones. Those explain themselves in interesting ways.
- Check the result exists in the system you are actually playing before building around it.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
