Sensory Writing Prompt Generator

Generates a random prompt to describe a scene using only one or two senses at a time — a focused descriptive-writing exercise.

What this generator does

Draws a scene to describe using only one or two named senses. The constraint is the exercise: prose defaults heavily to the visual, and forcing a scene to work on sound or smell alone usually produces sharper detail than describing everything would.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 12 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Describe a swimming pool using only smell and sound
  • Describe a crowded room using only sound
  • Describe a beach at night using only sound and touch
  • Describe a forest using only smell
  • Describe a picnic using only taste and touch
  • Describe a bakery using only smell

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 12, without repeating until the list runs out. Original authoring for Generate Random.. Last reviewed 2026-07-19.

Common use cases

  • Descriptive-writing practice
  • Breaking a habit of over-relying on visuals
  • Creative-writing classroom exercises

Limitations and good to know

  • Twelve sensory prompts in all, and the no-repeat default walks through every one before offering any of them twice — so a class of twelve can each be given a different prompt to write from.
  • Only the scene and the permitted senses are given; the actual describing, which is the point of the exercise, is entirely yours to do.

Practical tips

  • Do the same scene twice with different senses and compare. The version that surprises you is usually the one that was not sight.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
