Sentence Starter Generator
Generates a random sentence-starter fragment — an incomplete opening line to finish and build on — distinct from a full writing prompt, for a quick creative-writing warm-up.
What this generator does
Draws an opening clause for a piece of writing. A starter does its work by removing the blank page rather than by being good — most students rewrite the opening later, and the ones who never start never get to that point.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- The last thing I expected to find was...
- Nobody believed me when I said...
- It started as an ordinary Tuesday, until...
- The letter had been sitting there for years before...
- She never talked about the year that...
- It wasn't the noise that woke me — it was the silence after it.
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated creative-writing sentence-starter fragments. Last reviewed 2026-08-17.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.
Practical tips
- Give the whole class the same starter and read four aloud. The variety is the lesson.
- Let students abandon the starter once they are going; its job is finished by the second sentence.
