Sentence Expansion Challenge Generator

Generates a short, plain sentence to expand with added detail, connectives and description — a common technique for building more sophisticated sentence structure.

What this generator does

Draws a short sentence to expand, with a constraint on how. Expansion with a constraint teaches something that free rewriting does not: it forces a specific grammatical move — a subordinate clause, a fronted adverbial — rather than just adding adjectives.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • The dog barked.
  • She opened the door.
  • He ran quickly.
  • They arrived late.
  • The phone rang.
  • The car stopped.

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated sentence-expansion exercise list. Last reviewed 2026-07-25.

How to use this tool

  1. Press generate for a starter sentence.
  2. Rewrite it, adding as much detail as you can.

Common use cases

  • Sentence-structure practice
  • English/language arts lessons
  • Quick grammar warm-ups

Randomness and fairness

Sentences and constraints are drawn uniformly with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, and the pairing between them is not curated — some combinations will be awkward, which is often where the interesting work is.

For how randomness is produced across the whole site, see how Generate Random works.

Practical tips

  • Cap the expansion at one extra clause. Unlimited expansion produces a paragraph, not a better sentence.
  • Compare two students' expansions of the same sentence side by side; it makes the grammatical choice visible.
