Shape Tracing Worksheet Generator

Most tracing sheets are one shape with the ink turned down, which makes the hardest row the palest rather than the hardest. Here the shape is built from the level, so a harder wave has more humps in it, a harder zigzag has more corners, and a harder spiral has more turns. How much of the shape is given away is a separate dial: a solid line to go over, then a dotted one, then a faint one, then an empty row. Every shape on the sheet is worked out from the settings rather than pulled from a stock library or made by an AI model, so the sheets are yours to print, copy for a class or sell, with nothing to license and nobody to credit.

Understanding the controls

What to practise
Straight lines, zigzags, waves, loops, spirals, arches, straight-sided shapes, or one of the pictures. Each is a family of shapes rather than one fixed squiggle.
Difficulty
Builds the shape: more humps in the wave, more corners on the zigzag, more turns of the spiral. The path the hand takes really is longer.
How many rows
Between two and eight. Eight is the most that fits with room to write between them.
How the rows change
Trace then copy then draw it yourself always ends with an empty row. The fade gives a little less on every row. Or keep every row the same.
Seed
A word gives back exactly the same sheet, so a series can be repeated.

Randomness and fairness

Shapes are drawn from your browser's cryptographic random source unless you give a seed. Reusing a seed returns the same shapes in the same rows, so a class set can be reprinted to match — reproducibility, not cryptographic strength.

Limitations and good to know

  • The picture option draws the same geometric figures the rest of the drawing sheets use. They are shapes to follow rather than lifelike animals or objects.
  • The shapes are geometric — lines, curves, loops, arches, polygons and the picture outlines. There are no letters or numbers to trace here.
  • Eight rows is the most that fits on a page and still leaves room to write between them.

Frequently asked questions

Are these safe to use in something I sell?
Yes. Each shape is worked out from the settings you chose — the number of humps in a wave, the corners on a zigzag — so nothing on the sheet came from a stock library or from an AI model. There is no licence to buy and nobody to credit, whether the sheet goes to one child or into a book. The difference that matters is where the shape came from. A sheet built out of words or pictures you supplied would leave you carrying whatever those words or pictures are; a wave worked out from a number of humps carries nothing at all.
Is this for handwriting?
It is for the movements underneath handwriting — the straight pull, the curve, the loop, the change of direction. For letters and words on lined paper, the handwriting practice sheet does that instead.
Why does the last row have nothing on it?
Because that is the point of the sheet. Tracing shows the shape, copying tests whether it was noticed, and an empty row is where you find out whether it stuck.
Can I make the same sheet again?
