Six-Word Story Generator
Generates a random complete six-word story — an entire narrative arc in six words, in the tradition popularised by the 'six-word memoir' format.
What this generator does
Draws a complete six-word story. The form works because six words cannot hold both an event and its consequence, so one has to be implied — reading a good one is largely the reader assembling the part that is missing, which is a useful thing to feel deliberately as a writer.
What you'll get
This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 10 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:
- Sold the house. Kept the key.
- Found the letter. Never sent it.
- Left the porch light on, still.
- The garden grew. Nobody noticed.
- Changed the locks. Kept his photo.
- Packed light. Never planned to return.
A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 10, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated six-word story examples, in the tradition popularised by the 'six-word memoir' format. Last reviewed 2026-08-17.
How to use this tool

- Micro-fiction writing exercises
- Classroom creative-writing warm-ups

Practical tips
- Use them as models rather than prompts. Count which of the six words is doing the implying, then try to build a sentence with the same structure about your own material.
Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
