What this generator does

Draws one of nine written soups, most of them a main ingredient or two and something to finish it. The finish is the part that matters and the part usually left out: almost every homemade soup is improved more by an acid or a crunch at the end than by anything done to it earlier.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 9 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

• Roasted tomato and basil, finished with a swirl of cream.
• Butternut squash and sage, topped with toasted seeds.
• Spiced lentil and carrot, finished with a squeeze of lemon.
• Broccoli and Stilton, with a scattering of crumbled cheese on top.
• Minestrone with whatever vegetables need using up.
• Thai-style coconut and sweet potato, with a chilli garnish.

• The 9 entries are recipe-combination ideas rather than a full recipe — quantities, cooking time and method are not given.

Practical tips

• Season at the end and taste twice — soup takes considerably more salt than it looks like it should.
• If the combination sounds wrong, make it anyway at half quantity. Most of them are not wrong.
