Spelling Challenge Generator

Generate a random commonly-misspelled word for spelling practice or a classroom spelling bee. Twenty-two fixed words, all genuinely and commonly misspelled by fluent English writers, not just by learners.

What this generator does

Supplies the word, one of 22 that fluent writers get wrong, and leaves the task to you: a dictation, a bee, a look-cover-write-check. Pair it with the word scramble generator, which takes your own list and makes a worksheet from it.

What you'll get

This generator draws from a hand-checked list of 22 entries. Here is a spread of 6 of them, so you can see the style before you generate:

  • Necessary
  • Occasion
  • Occurrence
  • Miscellaneous
  • Consensus
  • Weird

A fixed sample of the list, not a live draw — your own results are picked at random from all 22, without repeating until the list runs out. Original HEKNO-curated commonly-misspelled word list. Last reviewed 2026-08-03.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose how many words you need.
  2. Generate to see your words.

Common use cases

  • Spelling bee practice
  • Classroom spelling homework
  • Self-testing before a spelling test

How this generator works

Draws from twenty-two fixed words without repeats up to a batch of ten — words like 'rhythm', 'bureaucracy' and 'questionnaire' that trip up adult writers, not simple phonetic ones a beginner speller would find hard.

Limitations and good to know

  • The words are pitched at competent, older spellers — this is not a beginner or early-primary spelling list.
  • Twenty-two words is enough for one spelling bee round, but a term of weekly tests will repeat the list several times over.

Practical tips

  • Say the word, use it in a sentence, then say it again — the standard dictation pattern, and it exists because a word alone is ambiguous.
  • Practise the words pupils get wrong rather than the whole list again; the correct ones are already correct.

Entries are chosen with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every entry on the list is equally likely. How Generate Random works.
